It was very difficult to make the journalist and her editor understand (despite their best intentions) why names and pronouns were so important. However, apart from that, and a general knowledge of getting bullied, I can't remember much about any of this. In fact, I remember my childhood as the best time of my life (how ironic). In retrospect, I wonder if my subconscious has actually repressed these memories? I literally remember nothing about the urinal incident. I know I hate using urinals, but I can't tell if that was from this incident directly, or just having aspergers in general? Anyway, I love you for doing what you did, I just wish I could remember it.

-AdamAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8551212131198252240.post-6592484989937661702010-10-13T17:07:48.789+08:002010-10-13T17:07:48.789+08:00You are absolutely right. That so many people stay silent is what gives bullies such power.

When I was 9-10 years old I was suicidal. I ache for that little girl now, who was bullied so viciously that life was simply unbearable. I'm thankful I survived. But I shouldn't have had to 'survive' childhood - no child should.

It is heartening that people with your convictions are working with children - a real difference can be made by just being there, and caring, and not staying silent.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8551212131198252240.post-87248522038069870642010-09-25T17:04:07.381+08:002010-09-25T17:04:07.381+08:00This is an excellent post. I no longer give blood because several years ago a phlebotomist was preparing to insert the needle and saw some of the scars on my arm. I used to self-injure and when she asked how I got them I outright admitted how it happened. The response I got: "Why would a pretty girl like you do a thing like that?" It's similar to what my mother says any time my depression is bad. What have you got to be sad about? That's not what's at issue here.

Thankfully, my PCP recognizes that things aren't always how they appear - both for the good and for the bad. AIUI, sex educators prefer the term safer sex, because no sex is entirely risk-free, but general usage is to talk of condoms, dental dams etc as "safe".

Similarly, when we teach kids about crossing the road, we talk about "road safety", but crossing the road is inherently risky however many precautions you take.

So "safe" in the SSC terminology has (I think) the same connotations as "road safety" and "safe sex".

Of course, that still leaves that "safe" as a term tends to argue against things like cutting and breathplay.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8551212131198252240.post-75861030710736054832010-06-05T10:11:34.590+08:002010-06-05T10:11:34.590+08:00Thank you.
